Quick answer
Most small businesses in Detroit can expect to pay somewhere between about $500 and $2,000 a month for ongoing SEO, based on national agency pricing surveys, with competitive industries and multi-location companies often paying more. Hourly SEO work commonly runs $75 to $150 an hour, and one-time projects such as audits range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. Where you land in that range depends less on your zip code and more on how competitive your industry is, how much work your website needs, and what is actually included.
There is no published survey of SEO prices specific to Detroit, so the numbers below come from national studies. We’ll explain what they say, what moves the price up or down for a Metro Detroit business, and how to compare quotes without getting burned.
What the pricing surveys say
Two recent industry surveys give a reasonable picture of the market. Keep in mind that both are based on what agencies and freelancers report charging, not on audited invoices.
Monthly retainers
- Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers (published December 2023, updated 2024). The most common monthly retainer band was $501 to $1,000. For local SEO specifically, the average reported retainer was about $1,557 a month, with agencies averaging a bit higher than freelancers.
- SE Ranking and Duda surveyed 260 agencies (published December 2024). 64% charged under $1,000 a month, 20% charged $1,000 to $2,000, 13% charged $2,000 to $5,000, and 2% charged more than $5,000. In the US and Canada, 22% of agencies charged over $2,000 a month.
Put together, a monthly local SEO engagement for a single-location small business usually sits between $500 and $2,000, and more involved programs run higher.
Hourly rates
Ahrefs found the most common hourly rate was $75 to $100, with consultants more often charging $100 to $150. SE Ranking found that 40% of US and Canadian agencies charge more than $125 an hour. Hourly billing makes sense for a specific fix or a few hours of advice, but it is hard to budget for an ongoing campaign.
One-time projects
Project pricing varies the most. SE Ranking found about two-thirds of agencies charge $500 to $2,000 per project, while the most common band in the Ahrefs data was $2,501 to $5,000. The difference comes down to scope: a basic technical audit is a very different job than a full site migration or a content build-out.
These are industry ranges, not XPN Marketing’s prices. Your quote should come from an actual look at your site and market.
What drives the cost for a Detroit business
How competitive your search terms are
“Personal injury lawyer Detroit” and “roofer near me” are fought over by well-funded competitors. “Upholstery repair Hamtramck” is not. The more established the businesses already ranking, the more content, links and time it takes to compete, and the more the work costs.
How many locations and service areas you cover
A single storefront in Dearborn needs one well-optimized Google Business Profile and a strong location page. A contractor serving Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, or a company with four branches, needs more pages, more profiles and more ongoing management.
The state of your website
If your site is slow, hard to use on a phone or built on a platform that makes changes difficult, some budget will go toward fixing that before rankings can move. Sometimes that means a separate web design project rather than stretching an SEO retainer to cover it.
What is actually included
Two $1,000 quotes can hide very different amounts of work. One might include new service pages every month, Google Business Profile management and review strategy. Another might be a monthly report and a few title tag changes. Always ask for the deliverables in writing.
What a typical local SEO retainer should cover
For most Metro Detroit small businesses, a solid monthly program includes some mix of the following:
- Google Business Profile management: categories, services, photos, posts, and responding to reviews.
- On-page work: title tags, headings, internal links and page content written for the searches your customers actually use.
- Location and service pages: useful pages for the cities and services you want to rank for, not thin copies with the city name swapped.
- Technical fixes: site speed, mobile usability, indexing problems and broken pages.
- Citations and local links: consistent name, address and phone listings, plus links from real local sources like chambers, sponsorships and community groups.
- Reporting tied to leads: calls, form fills and direction requests, not just rankings.

Pricing models compared
| Model | Typical range (per surveys) | Best for |

| One-time project | $500 to $5,000+ | Audits, migrations, one-off content builds |
Ranges are drawn from the Ahrefs and SE Ranking/Duda surveys cited above.
Red flags when comparing SEO quotes
Cheap SEO is not always bad and expensive SEO is not always good. Watch for these warning signs regardless of price:
- Guaranteed rankings. Google’s own guidance on hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a number one ranking.
- Vague deliverables. If they can’t tell you what they’ll do each month, assume it isn’t much.
- Long lock-in contracts with no exit. Some minimum term is reasonable because SEO takes time, but you should be able to leave if the work isn’t happening.
- Bulk link packages. Buying hundreds of links from unrelated sites can do more harm than good.
- No access to your own accounts. You should own your website, Google Business Profile, Analytics and Search Console.
How to budget for SEO in 2026
Start with your numbers, not ours. Figure out roughly what a new customer is worth to you over a year, how many new customers you’d need each month to make the investment worthwhile, and how long you can commit before judging results. Local SEO usually takes several months to show meaningful movement (we cover realistic timelines in our companion post on how long local SEO takes to work).
If you need leads this month, SEO alone probably isn’t the answer. Many Detroit businesses pair it with Google Ads for immediate visibility while organic rankings build, then shift budget as SEO starts producing.
It also helps to see who you’re up against before you set a budget. Our real-time competitor analysis shows how your visibility compares to the businesses currently ranking in your area, which makes it much easier to judge whether a quote is realistic.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO cheaper in Detroit than in bigger cities? There’s no reliable Detroit-specific pricing data. Agencies anywhere tend to price by competition and scope rather than city, so a competitive Detroit industry can cost as much as the same industry elsewhere.
Can I do local SEO myself? Yes, many basics are do-it-yourself friendly: claiming and filling out your Google Business Profile, asking for reviews and keeping your hours accurate. The harder parts are technical fixes, content at scale and earning quality links.
How long should an SEO contract be? Many agencies ask for three to six months because results take time. Make sure the agreement spells out deliverables and how to cancel.
Should I pay for SEO or Google Ads? They do different jobs. Ads buy visibility right away and stop when you stop paying. SEO builds visibility that lasts but takes longer. Most local businesses benefit from some of both.
What does XPN Marketing charge? It depends on your market, goals and website. We’ll give you a written scope and price after reviewing your situation.
