Facebook and Instagram ads can fill a restaurant on a Tuesday, book out a salon for the month or bring in a steady flow of estimate requests for a contractor. They can also burn through a budget with nothing to show for it. The difference almost always comes down to a few decisions: who you target, what you show them and what you ask them to do.
What works
Tight local targeting, scroll-stopping video or real photos, one clear offer, an easy way to respond and a budget that runs long enough for Meta to learn who your best customers are.
Start with the right goal
Meta will optimize for whatever you tell it to. If you pick “traffic”, it finds people who click but rarely buy. If you want customers, choose a goal tied to action: leads, messages, calls, bookings or purchases. Then make sure tracking is set up so Meta can see which ads produce results.
Target your real service area
For most local businesses, a radius around your location or a list of the cities you serve works best. A Dearborn restaurant might target Dearborn, Dearborn Heights and Allen Park. A roofing company might cover all of Wayne and Oakland County. Let Meta’s targeting do the rest, but keep the geography tight enough that every person reached could actually become a customer.
Creative is the new targeting
Your ad has about a second to stop someone from scrolling. What works best for local businesses:
- Short vertical videos showing your work, your team or the result your customer gets.
- Real photos instead of stock images. People trust what looks real.
- Customer reviews and before-and-after shots as proof.
- A clear headline that says what you offer and who it is for.

Lead with one strong offer
“Call us today” is not an offer. “Free roof inspection this month”, “First class free” or “20% off your first detail” gives people a reason to act now. Keep it to one offer per ad and make it easy to understand at a glance.
Make responding effortless
Instant forms, click-to-message and click-to-call ads remove friction. If you send people to your website, make sure the landing page matches the ad, loads fast on mobile and has one clear next step. And respond to leads fast. A lead contacted within minutes is far more likely to book than one called the next day.
Give the campaign time and budget to learn
Meta needs data to find your best customers. Changing ads every day or splitting a small budget across ten ad sets slows that learning down. Start focused, test two or three creative ideas, and let the winners run.
Mistakes that waste money
- Boosting random posts instead of running real campaigns.
- Targeting all of Michigan when you serve five cities.
- No tracking, so nobody knows which ads bring customers.
- Letting leads sit for hours before following up.
